An Taoiseach launches the LYCS website
Business and community interests get together for impressive new web launch
Dublin, Ireland, December 4th 2006 - Dublin inner city community development centre goes online for first time. Taoiseach launches community website initiative in Dublin.
An innovative social partnership between Lourdes Youth and Community Services in Dublin's Sean McDermott Street and Kainos, a leading Irish technology firm, has yielded an impressive new web presence for LYCS which was launched today by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, T.D. A highly regarded community development organisation, LYCS will now use the website to promote its development and education programmes and to inform decision makers and the general public more easily about its work. www.lycs.ie
The connection between LYCS and Kainos was first established by twin sisters Jackie and Annemarie Maguire who work for the respective organisations. They had the idea of linking up and subsequently brought the proposals to life with their colleagues. The initiative forms part of wider corporate responsibility programmes at Kainos. Developed over six months, the overall project cost has been waived entirely including the provision of a content management system where LYCS will be able to manage and update its new site.
Speaking at the launch, An Taoiseach commented: "Since 1984, LYCS has opened up opportunities to many people in inner city Dublin through its integrated education, training, recreation and development projects. These opportunities have allowed local people to become involved in their own development as well as that of their community. The success of their work has clearly demonstrated the truth of their philosophy that personal development is inextricably linked to community development.
"I know that LYCS is deeply indebted to Kainos, the IT company who developed the website for free. This venture provides us with an excellent example of the voluntary sector working in partnership with the public sector. Many congratulations are due to Kainos for putting so much into this project and for producing such a fine end product.
LYCS is a community development project based just off Seán MacDermott Street in Dublin's North-East Inner City which provides education, training and development support in a range of programmes designed for over 300 children, young people, early school leavers and older adults each week. LYCS also provides crèche and daycare facilities for children, many of whose parents are also participants in LYCS programmes.
Sarah Kelleher, Director of LCYS commented: "For a relatively small organisation with finite resources, this development is important for us. The information requirements which underlie a community-based project like LYCS are very dynamic - there are constant changes, including new programmes of activity, new courses, news releases and more. Our new website will allow us to project our message out even better than before. It is a real advantage which will save us time and money. It provides a window for the world into what we do and an outlet where we can demonstrate the talents of our community, many of whom will play an active role in providing content onto the site."
"More than ever, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations are turning to the web to deliver relevant information and interactive services to their constituents," said Damian Kelly, Director of Consulting at Kainos. "To be successful, they need to present a powerful vision and build stronger relationships and community online. In developing this website we helped LYCS to build an interactive communications channel, which can be easily managed and adapted to reflect the vibrancy and energy of the local community."
"We would also like to thank our technology partners, Ektron and eircom, for their generous assistance in providing free software and hosting services. This has been a successful partnership all round."
Tom Gray, Chief Technology Officer of Kainos commented: "In terms of the systems used by Kainos for this implementation, Ektron CMS400.NET is noted as one of a new wave of Microsoft based Web Content Management applications that are more user friendly. It allows organisations like LYCS to handle tasks such as editing content and managing styles without requiring an in-house technology capability. In addition to content management, Ektron also provide comprehensive support for the establishment of online communities through blogs, forums and message boards."
