The Evolve Clinical Reference Group (CRG) was established by Kainos to provide its software and business development teams with independent advisory input from senior practicing healthcare professionals.

The role of the CRG is to provide relevant expert advice to support the product development and market positioning of Evolve, Kainos’s unique clinician-focused electronic medical record (EMR) and workflow solution. This invaluable input includes pertinent updates on NHS policy and strategy.

Chaired by Brendan Major, a senior healthcare business consultant at Kainos steeped in first-hand industry experience, the CRG features an impressive roll-call of names, representing all corners of the NHS.

Brendan Major, Chair

Brendan Major is an MBA, an experienced Programme and Project Manager, and Certified Engineer. He has previously held board positions in the Charity sector and within the NHS as a Director of ICT. He helped negotiate the 2003 National Programme for IT contract for London and moved to BT’s Health Division as Director of Trust Engagement in 2007. He now lives in Northern Ireland.

Julie Hunt, Commissioning Lead

Julie Hunt is currently working as Director of Nursing & Quality for NHS West Kent. She has a breadth of experience across all sectors of the NHS including the Department of Health and across the range of clinical, IT, managerial and executive positions. Julie trained as a Nurse and specialised in Community Nursing before pursuing a management career which included extensive experience in IT both strategically as part of the London NPfIT and operationally within trusts and the PCT. Julie has been working in Commissioning for the last 3 years for a PCT which was recently the most improved in the country in the World Class Commissioning assessment process. She lives in SE London with her 2 teenage daughters.

Melanie Mavers, Nurse Lead

Melanie is currently working as Head of Clinical Quality at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She holds a BA (Hons), is a Registered General Nurse with a background in critical care and is working towards an MSc in Integrated Governance in Healthcare Communities. For the last four years she has held corporate level Clinical Risk Management roles in three London teaching hospitals. She has been involved with the implementation of electronic incident reporting in all three Trusts. She currently lives in London.

Phil Koczan, GP Lead

Dr Phil Koczan is a GP and Health Informatician working in North East London. He is a fellow of the Royal College of GP’s and has an MSc in Medical Informatics from Bath University. He practices 2 days per week as a GP partner and has a strong interest in the evolving NHS reorganisation, particularly around clinical data and its use for both patient care and commissioning.

Jason Smith, Consultant Lead

Jason is a consultant surgeon running a large surgical practice at The West Middlesex University Hospital in West London. He also runs a research unit with colleagues at Imperial College & Chelsea & Westminster Hospital whose principal interests are in risk adjustment in surgery, patient outcomes, colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. In addition Jason is a Senior Analyst for the National Bowel Cancer Audit Programme (NBOCAP) and the Association of Coloproctology of GB&I a role which involves the collation, statistical analysis and publication of large volumes of national data.

Damian Morris, Consultant Lead

Damian is a Consultant Physician in Diabetes & Endocrinology and General Medicine at The Ipswich Hospital NHS trust, Suffolk. He has a PhD in Endocrinology and continued research interests in this field and Diabetes. He has a strong track record in providing clinical engagement expertise to the implementation of IT solutions at the trust. His key driver to support CRG is to provide intuitive and user friendly systems for clinical and other staff. He has been closely involved since October 2008 in the development of the product that is now Evolve. He is currently working with Kainos to develop a Diabetes database system based within Evolve.
