Egg
The Challenge
Egg plc was launched in October 1998 and has grown into the world's largest pure online bank. Originally envisaged as a direct financial services operation with some 1,500 call centre agents, it now provides borrowing, saving and insurance services to customers in the UK.
Prior to launch, Kainos was chosen to provide a customer services solution that could handle anticipated customer demand efficiently. Faced with a tight deadline - and with a requirement to use existing call centre and banking systems that were not designed for the online environment - Kainos had to design a system to provide the required flexibility and capacity.
The Solution
Kainos provided the essential customer management functionality for Egg, comprising:
- a call centre application based on the Graham Technology GT-X Business Process Server.
- a middleware layer to integrate telephony and other business applications.
- a bulk printing solution to generate and deliver personalised communications to customers.
- a customer relationship management database providing a single view of the customer.
These systems were integrated with the bank’s core banking system, credit scoring, credit checking and branch identification applications. Throughout the project, the team had to deal with daily changes to business requirements resulting in continual revisions of the database schema with knock-on effects on the GT-X modules.
The Benefits
Egg met the deadline! The bank was launched successfully on time with all elements of the new architecture in place and operational. Kainos delivered the solution in 20 weeks, achieving an almost impossible goal, and earning the respect and admiration of co-workers and client.
Our systems were able to handle customer demand. The Kainos solution stood up to the tidal wave of customer interest generated during the first eight weeks after launch. Over 150,000 customers and £1.5bn in deposits were handled effectively in that initial period. The systems proved robust and scaleable enough to handle subsequent customer demand.
