The team of 10 girls, which is sponsored by digital technology solutions company Kainos, saw off competition from 16 other teams at an event held at W5 last week. The FIRST? LEGO? League Competition (FLL?), operated in the UK and Ireland by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), encourages young people aged 9-16 years to think like scientists and engineers in a bid to address real world issues. This year, teams were challenged to find better and more innovative ways of helping people learn new skills, while simultaneously building and programming an autonomous robot using the LEGO? MINDSTORMS? kit to complete a series of missions. The Victoria College team impressed judges in all elements of the competition, with their robot performing admirably in the Robot Games, and their idea to improve how people learn a prototype called 'Rainbow the dog' helping them stand out from the competition. Full details of the team's innovative idea are being kept under wraps until the UK and Ireland final which will take place at Loughborough University on 1st February 2015. Commenting on the team's success, Tom Gray, CTO at Kainos said: 'I am extremely impressed by the talent and creativity that the girls have displayed throughout the tournament, and I wish them the best of luck in the next stage of the competition. 'It is always a pleasure for Kainos to support initiatives like this, where young people are encouraged to explore how science and technology can positively impact the real world. I hope the girls are enjoying this experience and I'm confident they'll be part of the next generation of technologists and engineers.' The winner of the UK and Ireland National final will go on to compete in the World FLL? Festival in St. Louis, USA.
