NHS Trust saves over £3million per year with Kainos Evolve

Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has reported annual cost saving in excess of £3million as a result of implementing Kainos Evolve, an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system which enables mobile digital access to medical records across the Trust. The Trust, which serves a population of 380,000 with a 3,600-strong workforce implemented Kainos Evolve in 2015 as part of an ambitious digitalization project aimed at transforming the formerly paper-reliant Trust into a modern digital environment focused on optimal patient care standards. Simon Marshall, Director of Finance and information at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals stated 'Each year we save in two main areas, the first is in our administrative costs, upon which we put a savings value of £1.2million per year. The second area is in clinical productivity, releasing doctors back into patient care, which we've valued at a cost saving of £1.5million per year.' Marshall continued 'So far we've uploaded around 500,000 patient's details onto the Evolve platform and expect to save £100,000 each year just by taking paper out of our future clinical processes. We've put a value on the space saving in our main medical records departments at £360,000 per year, which is now freed up for direct patient care.' In addition to the financial benefits achieved by the project, the Trust is seeing quicker diagnosis times and higher treatment standards through mobile working and enabling access to real-time patient data at the point of care. Abdullah Jibawi, Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Chief Clinical Information Officer at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals stated, 'With instant access to data whether online or offline, patient care is improved because we no longer need to waste time searching for patient notes and my colleagues and I can collaborate much more effectively to deliver better patient care.' Brendan Mooney, CEO of Kainos commented, 'We are delighted to be a part of Ashford and St Peters' digital transformation story and it is wonderful to see our Evolve product deliver such a significant return on investment for the Trust now and in the years to come.' Suzanne Rankin, Chief Executive, Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals stated, 'To be at the leading edge of paperless healthcare will enable huge opportunities for efficiency which I believe will exceed £30million over a 10-year period.'
