Sustainable operations across our business
Sustainability is part of how we run our business every day. We focus on reducing the environmental impact of our operations through energy and resource efficiency, responsible waste management and engaging our people in climate action.
Energy and resource efficiency
All Kainos UK offices are powered by 100% renewable electricity, and we have completed the transition to energy-efficient lighting across our main sites. Our new Belfast headquarters is targeting BREEAM Outstanding, with an all-electric, low-energy design aligned to our net zero ambitions. We monitor and report our energy performance through our Annual Report, CDP disclosure and Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirements.
Waste management
We have achieved 100% landfill diversion across our UK offices, with waste either recycled or recovered. We work with certified partners to refurbish, reuse or responsibly recycle technology equipment, helping reduce electronic waste. We also take practical steps to minimise waste at source, including reducing single-use plastics and working with suppliers to reduce food and packaging waste.
Engaging our people
Our people play an important role in helping us achieve our environmental goals. We believe meaningful progress happens when people understand our commitments, feel connected to them and have opportunities to get involved. We measure climate action sentiment through our employee engagement platform, Peakon, helping us understand how people experience our environmental initiatives and identify opportunities to improve.
Climate literacy
Our Climate Action learning helps colleagues understand climate change, our environmental commitments and the role they can play. We also run awareness campaigns throughout the year linked to events such as Earth Day, COP and Plastic Free July.
Volunteering
Every employee receives two days of paid volunteering leave each year. We support environmental volunteering through partnerships with organisations such as The Conservation Volunteers, helping deliver projects including habitat restoration, biodiversity initiatives and tree planting.
Sustainable learning
We have reduced travel-related emissions from learning and development activities by delivering most learning virtually and providing extensive self-directed digital learning opportunities.
