Think Big. Be Bold. Do Great Things.

We support all our people to think big, be bold and to do great things. This mind-set is essential  when delivering a project for our clients in the public and private sectors as we work in partnership to ensure they get the most from the unlimited potential of digital transformation.

We asked Thomas Thornton to talk us through his career development so far at Kainos. He took a look at how  diverse opportunities and values match up to the reality of working with Kainos in our platform capability.

I joined Kainos in 2015 as an Ops Engineer. Six years on and I’m now an Azure Technical Specialist. In that time I’ve delivered some awesome solutions, had a fun journey and made a lot of awesome memories!

I’d never worked with cloud-related products before. It was a whole new area for me to learn, from virtual networks to how storage was created and everything-else in between. But Kainos helped me throughout with things like personal development and allowing me to work with and shadow colleagues.

As the weeks went by, I was introduced to Microsoft Azure – it was pretty new at that time and the ‘classic’ portal. I worked with lots of customers in both support and delivery roles, building the knowledge to get me where I am today.

Diverse Opportunities

What has stood out for me most along the way is how Kainos’ people promises have held true. I mean, lots of employers promise you the earth to get you in but then they don’t live up to those promises.

With us, you’ll work on projects that make a real difference, build a better world through technology, and leave a lasting positive impact and change the way our customers work for the better.

And here I am, just a few years later, having worked on many of these kinds of projects: I’ve been part of the team that helped the Pensions Regulator migrate to Microsoft Azure, helped to advance digital healthcare transformation, built Cloud architecture for Doctor Care Anywhere and helped HM Courts & Tribunals Service to migrate and modernize.

Along the way, I’ve also been supported to pick up a few Microsoft certifications - the list includes Azure Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, Azure Security Engineer, Azure Administrator and Certified Trainer (MCT).

And it hasn’t been all work. I’ve also been able to attend Microsoft Azure-related events such as Microsoft OpenHack DevOps – Paris,  Microsoft Ignite – Orlando, Microsoft Ignite – UK Tour and Microsoft Future Decoded.

Kainos also promise that “With Kainos, you’ll Achieve your potential. Then exceed it.

In 2019, I wanted to develop my presentation skills beyond the usual customer interactions by presenting at a Microsoft Azure user-group in Belfast and Kainos helped me to achieve my goal. I’ve now also spoken at numerous online events including The Cloud Skills Show – Hybrid Cloud & Azure Migrate and Jonnychipz – In Conversation with Thomas Thornton and Karl Cooke.

Passion is just the beginning

I relate to this because I’m highly passionate about what I do, in work and in life. So when I began to get more involved in the Microsoft Azure Community by starting to blog, my personal development really did begin to excel!

Helping you to go wherever your talents take you

I’ve been on an epic journey so far; I’ve collaborated more and more with the Microsoft Azure community; my content has been featured in numerous areas and my personal development hasn’t stopped.

Right now, I’m also enjoying taking part in events such as the Festive Tech Calendar and Azure Back to School and helping to run Azure Spring Clean.

Oh, and I’ve also been awarded Microsoft MVP

Which takes me to my final Kainos people promise:

“Amazing things happen when people believe they can”.

I believe I can do amazing things with Kainos and I’m looking forward to finding out what’s next!”.

We embrace the belief that anything is possible when people love what they do – and that’s what makes life at Kainos so special. But don’t take it from us – find out from our people what life at Kainos is really like.
