Ruth McGuinness appointed to Welsh Government’s AI Strategic Advisory Group
Ruth McGuinness, Director of AI at Kainos, has been appointed to the Welsh Government’s newly formed AI Strategic Advisory Group to help shape how artificial intelligence can transform public services for the 3.1 million people living in Wales.
The Welsh Government has committed £2.5 million to advance public sector AI innovation and establish a new Office for AI. Ruth joins a select panel of experts from business, academia and social partnership backgrounds to guide how AI can be used to innovate public services while maintaining trust, transparency and public confidence.
Ruth brings over a decade of experience delivering secure, high-performing AI solutions across sectors including healthcare, defence, central government, and financial services. With more than 350 successful AI projects under her leadership, she’s helped organisations adopt AI responsibly in complex, real-world environments.
In today’s agentic era, where AI systems increasingly act with autonomy and influence, Ruth’s work focuses on embedding trust, accountability, and human-centred design into every stage of AI deployment.
“I’m honoured to join the Welsh Government’s Strategic AI Advisory Group and grateful to Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Evans for the invitation to contribute,” said Ruth.
"Wales is uniquely positioned to lead in socially responsible AI, and I’m excited to help shape how it can ethically and effectively enhance public services. As someone from Northern Ireland, I also see powerful opportunities for collaboration across our regions to drive inclusive innovation."
At Kainos, we’ve built a reputation for delivering responsible and transparent solutions trusted by governments and enterprises across the world. Ruth’s appointment is a reflection of that trust, and of our ongoing commitment to helping shape the future of AI in the public sector.
We’re excited to support this work alongside the Welsh Government and look forward to the positive change this group will drive for communities across Wales.
