Kainos Environmental Policy

Kainos Group plc (Kainos) has an Environmental Programme in place that has been designed to help us reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainable practices in all aspects of our operations. It aligns with the Paris Agreement and BS8555/ISO 14005, underscoring our commitment to climate action and transparent reporting of progress towards our Science Based Targets.

Through climate action, we aim to understand, manage and reduce any harmful environmental impacts from our business activities and from our delivery of digital solutions, helping our customers and partners to reduce their own environmental impact. 

This policy provides the framework for setting and reviewing our environmental objectives and targets and forms part of our broader environmental management system aligned to ISO 14001 principles.

Objectives and targets 

Kainos successfully achieved its FY2026 Science Based Targets (SBTs), demonstrating sustained progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and value chain. Our FY2026 targets were to:

• Reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from a FY2020 baseline.
• Reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 45% per unit of value added from a FY2020 baseline.

We exceeded our Scope 1 and Scope 2 target, achieving a 75% reduction by FY2026. We also achieved our Scope 3 target, delivering a 45% reduction in emissions per unit of value added over the same period.

Building on this progress, we are working with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to develop and validate a new set of science-based targets for FY2031. These targets will cover Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions and will support our continued alignment with a 1.5°C pathway and long-term net zero ambitions.

Policy commitments 

Environmental protection and pollution prevention

• We are committed to protecting the environment and preventing pollution by reducing emissions, minimising waste, promoting resource efficiency and implementing responsible environmental practices across our operations and value chain. 
• We will maintain our formal e-waste recycling programme, working with reputable third-party disposal partners that seek to achieve 100% diversion of Kainos e-waste from landfill.

Resource efficiency and waste management

• We will promote the efficient use of natural resources and invest in practices and technologies that minimise waste to landfill and reduce our carbon footprint.
• We will reduce single-use plastics and ensure diversion from landfill.

Compliance and governance

• We will comply with relevant environmental legislation, regulations, and any other requirements to which Kainos subscribes. We will strive to exceed these requirements whenever possible. 

Continual improvement

We are committed to the continual improvement of our environmental management system and performance. This includes:

• Accurate capture of emissions data.
• Regular review and evaluation of environmental performance against approved science based targets.
• Implementation of corrective actions where necessary. 
• Open communication of our progress, strengths and challenges internally and externally to drive accountability and to inspire others. 

Engagement and awareness

• We will engage our people through Green Teams that lead and promote environmental activities across Kainos, supporting awareness and behavioural change. 
• We will support environmental education, awareness and biodiversity through volunteering initiatives including community garden development, river clean-ups and other conservation activities.

Collaboration and transparency

• We will work with customers, suppliers and partners to support sustainable outcomes and reduce environmental impacts, while openly communicating our environmental progress internally and externally.
• We will publicly disclose our environmental performance through recognised reporting frameworks, including CDP, and participate in industry collaborations that support climate action and sustainability.

Wider environmental stewardship

• We recognise the importance of protecting natural ecosystems and biodiversity and will support initiatives that contribute to environmental restoration and resilience.

Sustainable supply chain

• We aim to work with our suppliers and partners to reduce Scope 3 emissions by encouraging sustainable practices throughout our supply chain. This includes promoting environmentally responsible sourcing and waste management and engaging with suppliers who share our commitment to climate action. 

Innovative solutions

• We will seek to integrate sustainability into our products, services and business models to help our customers and partners to reduce their environmental impact. 

Leadership commitment

• This policy is approved by Kainos executive leadership and demonstrates top management commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action. 

Scope and Review

This policy applies to all Kainos operations globally, including employees and contractors, and will be reviewed annually to ensure ongoing relevance and effectiveness.
