Environmental Policy

Environmental Policy

Kainos has an Environmental Program in place that has been designed to help us reduce our environmental impact and to promote sustainable practices in all aspects of our operations. It aligns with the Paris Agreement and BS8555/ISO14005, underscoring our commitment to climate action and transparent reporting of progress towards SBTi net zero targets.

Through our climate action programme, we aim to understand, manage and reduce any harmful environmental impacts from our business activities and from our delivery of digital solutions, helping our customers and partners to reduce their own environmental impact. To do this, we have established the following environmental policy to guide our actions:

Objectives and targets

We have committed to near-term Science Based Targets (SBTs), which include:

  1. Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 70% by FY2026 from a FY2020 base year.
  2. Reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions by 45% per unit of value added within the same timeframe.

Policy framework

Enhanced employee engagement:

  • Engage our people through Green Teams that lead and promote environmental activities across Kainos.

Compliance and collaborations:

  • Compliance with relevant environmental legislation, regulations, and any other requirements to which Kainos subscribes. We will strive to exceed these requirements whenever possible.
  • Commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative and The Climate Pledge.
  • Annual reporting to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and partnership with the UK Global Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA).

Continuous improvement:

  • Accurate capture of our emissions data and regular review and evaluation of our environmental performance against approved Science Based Targets (SBT’s), taking corrective action wherever possible. We openly communicate our progress, strengths and challenges internally and externally to drive accountability and to inspire others.

Resource efficiency and waste management:

  • Promoting the efficient use of natural resources and invest in practices and technologies that minimise waste to landfill and reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Reducing single-use plastics and ensuring diversion from landfill.

 Energy efficiency and innovation:

Pollution prevention and e-waste management:

  • Continuance of our formal e-waste recycling program, working with reputable third party disposal partners who seek to achieve 100% global e-waste diversion from landfill on Kainos’ behalf.

Sustainable supply chain:

  • Working with our suppliers and partners to reduce Scope 3 emissions by encouraging sustainable practices throughout our supply chain. This includes promoting environmentally responsible sourcing and waste management and engaging with suppliers who share our commitment to climate action.

Innovative solutions:

  • Integrating sustainability into our products, services and business models to help our customers and partners to reduce their environmental impact.

Community engagement and education:

  • Continued partnerships with local charities to promote environmental education and awareness through volunteering initiatives including community garden development, river clean-ups, and other biodiversity and conservation projects.

Transparency and reporting:

  • Published updates in the ESG section of our Annual Report, with public disclosure of our environmental performance, achievements and future goals in our CDP submission.

Scope

This policy applies to all our operations and the employees and contractors who work in them.

Review and updates

This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as appropriate to enhance our environmental commitments.
