About Enbridge

Headquartered in Calgary, Canada, Enbridge is North America’s leading energy delivery company, moving 30% of the continent’s crude oil, 20% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S., and serving 7 million customers daily. With 16,000 employees, Enbridge is driving the global energy transition while ensuring safe, reliable, and sustainable energy delivery.

A digital-first HR journey

Enbridge’s journey with Workday began in 2017, implementing the full HCM suite along with the Workday Projects to modernise HR operations and time entry. By 2022, the company had adopted Workday Learning and consistently participated in early adopter programs including Workday Everywhere and Request Framework.

At Enbridge, digital transformation is rooted in empowering HR teams to focus on strategic work, ensuring that technology enhances operational excellence and supports the rapidly evolving and increasingly complex digital capability of the business.

Scaling Workday for growth and acquisitions

Recent acquisitions and the integration of new employee populations have presented opportunities to strengthen Enbridge’s HR capabilities. Acquisitions required full onboarding into Workday and other ERP applications, while simultaneously managing ongoing releases and annual enhancements.

Onboarding of these groups required careful management of operational complexity and compliance, while maintaining support for employees and teams throughout transitions.

Automation as a strategic enabler

Manual testing of HR systems was previously a significant task with subject matter experts (SMEs) creating and managing Excel-based test scripts for every release. Automation was implemented to enhance accuracy, compliance, and quality, helping teams work more efficiently and proactively.

Implementing Kainos Smart Test

The application of Kainos Smart Test at Enbridge demonstrates that automation, when thoughtfully applied, can relieve administrative burden and allow HR teams to concentrate on qualitative aspects of their work, such as people experience and team engagement.

Enbridge implemented Kainos Smart Test to automate testing across enhancements, releases, and acquisitions. The primary objectives were to free SMEs from manual testing, detect configuration, integration, and payroll changes earlier, and support acquisition testing with consistent, automated quality checks.

Transformative Results

By their first major Workday release, the team had fully automated the release cycle. The adoption of automated testing contributed to greater confidence in HR systems and processes. Teams were able to identify configuration and integration issues earlier in the testing cycle, facilitating smoother transitions and more reliable outcomes. Overall, this approach helped position HR teams to directly influence Enbridge’s digital strategy.

Building a foundation for the future

Enbridge continues to explore ways to enhance its HR operations thoughtfully. Teams continue to introduce tools and processes that help employees work more efficiently while adapting to evolving needs with technology playing a key supporting role.
