“Back when I was in year 10 at school, I could never have guessed where picking Computing for GCSE was going to take me. All I knew was that I had an interest in all things technological so enjoyed learning about Python and HTML/CSS, and developing my problem solving and logical thinking skills.
“Even after I’d finished my A-Levels in Computing, T&D and Media Studies, I’d no idea that I would soon be a full-time Software Engineer AND studying at Uni with no fees to think about afterward. Yet here I am!”
“I did some work experience at Kainos when I was 16 and that was when I found out about Earn As You Learn. It seemed unattainable but it gave me a goal to work towards.
When Can You Start to Earn As You Learn?
“I applied during my final year of school and was invited to an interview soon after. I was daunted - this could be one of the most important moments of my life! But despite my nerves, everyone at the interview made me feel welcome and comfortable. After a bit of a wait, I got a phone call to let me know that my application was successful, and I had been offered the job!
“Since then, I’ve learned more than I ever thought I could and worked with some amazing people on amazing projects. I’m about to start work on my final year project for Uni and it’s hard to believe that I’ve been here for over 3 years already.
What Can You Learn?
“During my time at Kainos I’ve worked on a large-scale government project, helped create a VR experience called “Dragonslumber” with renowned comic artist PJ Holden, written blog posts on new technologies, and given talks to prospective EAYL candidates and students, including at my old school.”
“I’m eternally grateful for the opportunities that Kainos has given me and look forward to what the future holds!”.
Eoin’s Tips for Success
- Get involved - the Kainos Work Experience scheme and Code Camp are great opportunities to not only learn new skills but show your interest in a career in IT.
- Ask for help - ask your family and your teachers to look over your application and give you advice on what to include or remove.
- Take your time - if you put genuine effort into your application it will show, and your passion will naturally flow through you.
- Use examples - don’t just say that you have certain skills or knowledge, talk about times you’ve used them and how they demonstrate your ability.
- Be yourself - as much of a cliché as it might be, showing your genuine interest and passion for not only a career with Kainos but for computing and technology in general, will only help you prove to the interviewers that you deserve a place.
