Meet the people behind our carbon net zero goals
At Kainos we set ourselves ambitious goals, we want to be a great employer, delight our customers and grow in a profitable and sustainable way. We also want to have a positive impact on the planet and leave a legacy we can be proud of.
Improving our environmental impact is one way of ensuring a positive legacy. For us it must be real, tangible improvement that can be measured and tested. We set ourselves an ambitious goal to be a carbon net zero company by 2025, we’re one of the first FTSE companies to commit to it so early.
To deliver on this target, we’ll use our technological expertise and best practice to reduce the environmental impact of our business. The good news is that we are making good progress. We just received a ‘B-rating’ on our most recent Carbon Disclosure Project Scoring Report (CDP).
CDP runs the largest environmental disclosure system in the world. They help thousands of companies, cities and states to measure and manage their risks and opportunities on climate change.
The CDP Report allows companies to understand their score and see which categories need attention to reach higher levels. The global average for companies in our sector is a “C-rating,” which is where Kainos was in 2021 and 2022.
Stephan Sakowicz, Leader of the Climate Change Action Group at Kainos explains. “A “C-rating” shows that an organisation has reached the awareness stage of how its business impacts the environment. To achieve a "B-rating” a company must turn that knowledge into action, addressing and managing their environmental impact. The new rating shows that we are starting to manage our impact on the world around us"
Recently Brendan Mooney, CEO of Kainos signed the Government Digital Sustainability Charter. Brendan tells us why this is an important move for Kainos.
“I am very proud to have signed the Government Digital Sustainability Charter. The climate emergency will not be solved by any one party; we all must work together, sharing creative ideas and solutions for a low carbon future. Kainos is ready and able to step up to the challenge, pooling our advanced technical skills with our fellow signatories to tackle the biggest challenge of our times.”
In fact, Kainos is so dedicated to reducing its environmental impact that it has created a new role to help deliver on its goals. Sarah Mcgeough has joined as the Environmental Sustainability Lead. Sarah has a wealth of experience in this field that she can bring to the team. Sarah said “I’m very excited to be joining Kainos at this time, and it’s great to see a company be so ambitious in its environmental goals. I’ve been working in this sector for over 15 years and I’m looking forward to helping Kainos achieve carbon net-zero by 2025. We have a lot to do, but by putting plans in place now and learning from best practice, I’m sure we can do it.”
A few weeks into her new role Sarah received more good news that Kainos has been included in the Sustainalytics list of Top-Rated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Companies for 2023. Sustainalytics is a leading Environmental, Social and Governance research and ratings firm that works with companies to help them consider sustainability in policies, practices and projects. Sarah explains what this means for Kainos.
“This rating is very positive, recognising Kainos as one of the best performing ESG companies rated by Sustainalytics, because of outstanding work that has taken place in 2022. The team at Kainos have achieved so much already, so I’m really looking forward to seeing what the next few years brings.”
We’ll follow up with Sarah once she has been in post a little longer to find out more about her work and her role at Kainos. But for now, we’d like to welcome Sarah to the team.
