Kainos partners with University of Oxford on Responsible Innovation study
Kainos is supporting the University of Oxford in researching responsible applications of technology. Taking into consideration the impact on people, the economy, culture, health, and the planet.
Funded by Responsible AI UK (RAI UK), the ‘Responsible Innovation Advantage in Knowledge Exchange’ project, or RAKE for short, is led by Professor Marina Jirotka from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford’s Responsible Technology Institute.
Responsible innovation is an approach to research and development that considers the wider impact of new technology. It encourages organisations to think about all the impacts, both big and small that their work could have on people and the environment. The result is better technology for all.
Kainos is contributing to RAI UK’s responsible AI research agenda by actively testing responsible innovation tools with our customers to understand their impact and the considerations that need to be made in balancing commerciality with responsibility.
Alongside Kainos, the consortium is led by the University of Oxford, the University of Warwick, the University of Nottingham, Beyond Reach, Swansea University, the National Archives, Platform 7, Pantar, Newton Europe, and Albino Mosquito.
Paul Batterham, Head of Innovation at Kainos, said: “At Kainos, we believe in the power of tech for good, creating solutions that improve daily life for millions of people. Responsible innovation is a huge part of this. We want to make sure that the work we do continues to have a positive outcome for our customers, their users and our planet.”
Professor Marina Jirotka, Professor of Human Centred Computing, at the University of Oxford, added: "It's always exciting to build bridges between academia and industry, and working with Kainos on embedding responsible innovation approaches into their projects is a fantastic way to translate academic research into real-world impact."
