The app development programme offered 80 young learners the chance to use MIT App Inventor to create real apps for Android phones and tablets. The 18 year old successfully developed Golf Buddy, an app that allows users to upload their results for each game of golf, allowing them to analyse their typical play and see trends on individual courses. The app can help to aid player development by highlighting strengths and weaknesses in their games. Nathanael won a top of the range Nexus tablet and accessories. The innovative CodeCamp course, developed by thriving technology company Kainos in conjunction with Belfast Met, will help to nurture the next generation of technology talent in Northern Ireland. Participants learnt about how software is designed, built and tested, leadership and project management skills and were introduced to career options in the IT industry. Other apps created during Kainos CodeCamp at Belfast Met included a Rota Sync that allows colleagues who work on rota-based schedules to interact with each other to update changes on rota, request shift cover and alert to any staff shortages, and a Mental Health Tracker that allows users to track their moods throughout each day. This will help the user to analyse any trends in their moods, thus helping to predict any times where they need extra medical help or emotional support. Nathanael Holmes spoke of his experience on the programme: 'Kainos CodeCamp at Belfast Met really appealed to me because it gives relevant and real experience in app creation, allowing me not only to learn about mobile app development, but also try my hand at it too. It has given me a real sense of what it's like to work in the software industry and introduced me to some potential career options. I am delighted to have won the award for Best App as it is a great way to top off a fantastic two weeks.' June Ingram, Director of Skills and Industry Division at the Department for Employment and Learning, congratulated the winners: 'The Northern Ireland economy is going through a considerable transformation and future jobs in the IT industry, which are already starting to be established, will require a highly skilled workforce across a range of areas including software development. Programmes like CodeCamp help enthuse learners from an early age and give them invaluable insight into software development. 'I would like to congratulate each of the CodeCamp participants, who have shown a real dedication and passion for software development. I must extend my admiration to the award winners who have progressed greatly over the two-week programme, and have shown high levels of creativity for developing mobile app technology.' The other award winners included Matthew Neil from Glengormly for Best App Idea and Georgia Grainger from Crossgar for Best Progress.
