Carbon reduction plans

Our focus is to ensure that we understand, manage, and reduce any harmful environmental impact of our business activities. In addition to our own operations, we aim to make a wider impact by helping our customers, colleagues, partners, and suppliers to achieve their own low-carbon futures. For many of our customers, our digital solutions significantly reduce the carbon impact of the ageing, inefficient and manually intensive systems that we are replacing.

Kainos achieved carbon neutrality in 2021 and is committed to achieving carbon net-zero by 2025. In support of the UK Government’s Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 06/21, and our drive towards net-zero, our Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) for Kainos Software Limited is available below.

Science Based Targets initiative

We’re proud to prove our commitment to building a sustainable future, by having our near-term science-based net zero targets validated by the SBTi - a key milestone that will help us to shape the world for future generations.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets.

What are science-based targets?

Science-based targets are emissions reduction targets in line with what the latest climate science says is needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement - to limit global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

Science-based targets provide a clearly-defined pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. Aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5°C and covering our entire carbon footprint (including harder to control Scope 3 emissions), we're proud to formally commit to reducing our direct (Scope 1 and 2) emissions by 70% and reducing our indirect (Scope 3) emission intensity by 45% by FY2026.

Our commitment

Kainos has had its emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative as consistent with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Kainos Group commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 70% by FY2026 from a FY2020 base year. Kainos Group also commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions 45% per unit of value added within the same timeframe.
