Creating social value in Shadwell: A playground rebuilt together
In Shadwell, East London – one of the most deprived areas in England – a cherished community space has been given new life.
Glamis Adventure Playground, run by the Shadwell Community Project, provides free play, meals, and belonging for more than 2,000 children aged 6 to 16. But in recent years, the playground had fallen into disrepair. To restore it, Kainos partnered with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Splash Projects to deliver a one-day build that brought immediate, visible change.
A partnership with purpose
The collaboration brought together 20 volunteers from Kainos and the MOD, guided by experts from Splash Projects. In total, the team contributed around 160 volunteer hours in a single day. Working side by side, the team constructed a nautical-themed play structure, reflecting Shadwell’s maritime heritage, using reclaimed and sustainable materials.
Beyond the main build, volunteers also measured and cut wood for the ship, assembled the structure using power tools, painted the play area, repurposed an old climbing frame, and added a new climbing wall - creating a bright, functional space designed to inspire creativity and active play.
Peter Fincham, MOD volunteer, reflected: “It was great to get out and make a difference. Everyone had a part to play. It’s the value of working of together in teams and delivering outcomes every day.”

Impact for the community
For children, the new playground is a safe, welcoming place to play and grow. For families, it’s a hub for connection. And for the wider community, it’s a source of pride and proof of what’s possible when people come together.
Since reopening in July, more than 500 children have already used the new play structure – a sign of the immediate impact it’s having on the community.
“There’s always been a family feel to Kainos,” added Kainos volunteer, Jen Mairs. “The project brought us together and left a lasting legacy for the children.”
Social value in action
At Kainos, social value is about more than frameworks or funding – it’s about showing up, listening and working alongside communities. This collaboration with MOD and Splash Projects reflects a shared commitment to building inclusive opportunities and making a positive difference in society.
Looking ahead
The true legacy of the project will be seen in the years to come: in how children use the playground, how families gather there, and how the community continues to shape it. By investing time, skills and resources into projects like Glamis Adventure Playground, Kainos aims to make a positive difference in the communities we’re part of - building not just technology, but brighter futures.
