Russell Sloan assumes CEO role at Kainos
Kainos, a leading UK-headquartered digital technology company, today confirms that Russell Sloan has assumed the role of CEO of Kainos following their AGM and Board Meeting held in Belfast today.
Russell’s appointment follows the announcement in June that Brendan Mooney, CEO of 22 years, would be stepping down from the role and working with Russell to prepare for the transition. Brendan, who joined Kainos as a trainee software engineer in 1989, will remain actively engaged with the business until June 2024, concluding a four-year succession planning process.
A graduate of Queen’s University Belfast, Russell joined Kainos in June 1999, also as a trainee software engineer, before embarking on a series of leadership roles. He has successfully led the company’s Digital Services division for the last decade, taking it from 35 people to more than 1,600, delivering digital transformation for government, healthcare and commercial sector organisations.
Working alongside Brendan for more than two decades, Russell has been a major contributor to the design and execution of the Kainos strategy, leading to its position as one of the most successful technology companies in the UK.

Russell Sloan, CEO of Kainos, commented:
“During my 24-year journey with Kainos, I've continuously embraced the incredible opportunities that lay ahead. Today, Kainos stands as a flourishing, expanding, and globally recognised business. As I step into my role as CEO, I feel fortunate to be supported by an exceptional and talented team who will work alongside me to further develop the already well-established, effective strategy. Under Brendan's leadership, we've grown something truly remarkable, and together, we are poised to take our successes to even greater heights.”
Brendan Mooney, said:
“It has been a wonderful experience to be a part of the Kainos family, working alongside not just colleagues but friends has made my 34 years in Kainos such a special experience. I’ve had the privilege to witness the impact of our work on our customers and society and as a result I’ve had the opportunity to see Kainos evolve from a local start-up into a thriving global powerhouse – it has been nothing short of amazing. Looking forward, I have complete confidence in Russell's ability, and I'm genuinely excited about what the future holds under his leadership.”
