Kainos Harnesses HP IDOL for Next-generation Healthcare Analytics

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 30, 2013 ? HP Autonomy today announced that digital technology solutions company Kainos has integrated HP IDOL 10.5, the new version of HP Autonomy's flagship information analytics engine, into Kainos' flagship Electronic Medical Records platform, Evolve?.

Kainos is a market-leading provider of digital services to healthcare providers, and has been using HP Autonomy's technology for several years. Today, more than 50 hospitals in the U.K. use the HP IDOL powered Evolve to improve service, quality of care and operational efficiency. Kainos recently completed integration of HP IDOL 10.5 to take advantage of enhancements in scalability, security and overall functionality.

HP IDOL 10.5 offers a substantial contribution to Evolve, and positively impacts the way healthcare professionals work. Many doctors can already access patient records digitally through tablets or other mobile devices. However, finding the relevant part of a document can often be prohibitively time consuming, as documents can be hundreds of pages long, and each document can use different terms or keywords for expressing the same concept.

HP IDOL uniquely recognizes concepts, patterns and ideas in the vast troves of unstructured human information, which today makes up 90 percent of the world's data. In the case of the Kainos Evolve platform, HP IDOL 10.5 automatically ingests and segments the medical records and documents according to the concepts contained within the materials. This lets doctors find that crucial piece of information instantly, right at the patient's bedside.

In addition to delivering a significant impact on the productivity and efficiency of healthcare professionals at the point of care, healthcare providers can use Evolve and HP IDOL 10.5 to dramatically improve overall provider care and effectiveness. HP IDOL forms an understanding of all this information and identifies patterns. This can reveal trends in areas such as patients being admitted with certain conditions or being prescribed specific medications.

These trends could be put to such uses as informing strategic decision making, as an early warning system, or as a system to benchmark drug deployment, yielding rapid results.

A number of trusts, including the Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, are testing the use of HP IDOL10.5 with Evolve to provide automatic indexing of information that was previously challenging to access and interact with, helping ensure their clinicians are fully aware of all pertinent information for the patient and their care.

'The ability to segment and analyze medical data according to the concepts it contains has huge implications for the healthcare sector,' said Nigel Hutchinson, head of Evolve, Kainos. 'This is the start of an exciting journey which promises to shake up the way the industry thinks about healthcare analytics.'

'The way Kainos is harnessing HP IDOL in Evolve shows the power of technology which understands concepts, rather than keywords,' said Alan Stein, vice president, Healthcare Technology, HP Autonomy. 'The key is the ability to spot the 'unknown unknowns'? patterns that would not become visible through traditional technology systems.'
