Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
Digitally transforming the driving test process
Learn how we partnered with the DVSA to digitally transform the driving test process, largely unchanged since 1934. We replaced the heavily manual, paper-based process with a user-centric, fully automated and cloud-based service that has helped improve delivery, reliability, performance and efficiency. The new service has been fully embraced by Driver Examiners who were at the heart of the project from the outset.
Gordon Witherspoon, Deputy Chief Driving Examiner/Head of Driver and Driver Training Policy, DVSA
The Pensions Regulator
The Pensions Regulator (TPR) is a national body responsible for protecting the UK’s workplace pensions. They needed to migrate their entire IT estate, consisting of over 300+ servers and 70+ applications, as it was being hosted in a data centre that was due to be decommissioned by a fixed date. Our goal was to migrate the full IT estate quickly with minimal disruption whilst ensuring that sensitive data was migrated securely and confidentially. We worked closely with their IT team throughout the project, transferring knowledge and skills to ensure business continuity following the migration to Microsoft Azure.
Richard Dance, IT Director, The Pensions Regulator

Migrating and modernising MOT testing services
We partnered with the DVSA to create the MOT Testing Service, a fully cloud-based online service, to support the digital modernisation of the MOT industry. The new service leverages modern IT infrastructure within MOT garages and removes the cost of operating and supporting the previous legacy mainframe-based MOT system. Adopting modern cloud technologies has helped reduce MOT fraud, increased testing quality and efficiency and has helped the DVSA become more agile.

DVSA
Intelligent risk ratings that improve road safety
Kainos worked with DVSA to pioneer a predictive analytics tool which has revolutionised the process for identifying fraud and inadequate standards. This machine learning (ML) tool enables DVSA to identify abnormal MOT testing behavioural patterns, effectively target enforcement and inspection activities, and ultimately improve Britain’s road safety.
The project, an excellent example of private and public-sector collaboration, highlights the benefits of leveraging ML techniques to achieve substantial business change and organisational strategic objectives; achievements a manual approach would not have accomplished.

FIND OUT MORERoyal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust
Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust selected Kainos Evolve® to drive digital transformation and improve patient care. Evolve will streamline the workload of clinicians across the Trust by digitising existing paper case notes and medical records, allowing healthcare providers to deliver better patient care. DVSA
MOT modernisation project
As part of a wider ICT modernisation programme, DVSA set out a plan to replace the national mainframe-based MOT system with a new online service. This plan had two ambitious objectives: first, it sought to reduce the operational cost of the MOT service by up to 50% and second, it aimed to improve the service provided to testers in garages around the country.
The MOT modernisation project was initiated by DVSA in 2013, and with support from Kainos the solution was delivered on time in September 2015, when the old system was decommissioned. Unlike its predecessor, the new service allows testers to use various devices (including laptops, tablets and desktop PCs and iMacs), and can be updated rapidly to meet business changes. It features a robust, scalable cloud-based infrastructure (one of the first government services on AWS) and is measurably easier to operate. Most of all, it is reducing the costs and improving the service delivered to garages.

We built the service in close collaboration with DVLA and GDS, using agile methods and open source technologies resulting in quick, cost effective delivery aligned to user needs.
KBC
IT support
Kainos developed a web-enabled solution (named Solas) that provides KBC’s staff with immediate access to all the information and documentation necessary to process a mortgage application. Based on Autonomy’s document management product, scanning and workflow technology are combined to facilitate faster data capture and to ensure that each step of the mortgage process is completed on schedule and by the appropriate personnel.
Solas automates most tasks in the process, using extensive business validation and a sophisticated calculations engine. The solution was also required to integrate all of the customer channels (web, phone and branch) and thereby ensure that brokers and customers would experience the same high quality of service through any interface.

Cornell University
Cornell wanted a testing solution that would help them keep their teams focused on the university’s strategic priorities, reduce the effort required to test major updates, and mitigate the risk around weekly Workday updates and security changes.
Since adopting Kainos Smart, Cornell has increased its testing capability by 700% during each major Workday update while simultaneously reducing the hands-on staff required to run those regression tests by 92%. This has saved the university hundreds of hours of manual testing each year (in terms of its original testing capacity) and thousands of hours annually (in terms of its current testing capacity). Importantly, this has freed up valuable staff to address other needs. It has also enabled the HRIS team to provide agile, robust support to implementation, training, and third-party systems teams while continuing to deliver their own Workday optimisation and roadmap efforts.
Seth Brahler, Senior Director of HRIS - Cornell University

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust
A pioneering initiative at the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, delivered in partnership with Kainos, has saved over £700,000 a year in late-submission fines by ensuring that GPs receive a written update within 24 hours of a patient leaving hospital.
The solution electronically captures complete clinical information about a patient during their hospital visit - including diagnoses, co-morbidities, investigation and results, procedures and treatments, medications and any follow-up arrangements. A full summary of this information can then be issued promptly to the patient’s GP by traditional mail or NHS mail.
